BULLS IN TRAINING is our introductory hockey program designed for 5-15 year olds,
modelled on the Hookin2Hockey & Hockey4Kids programs.

BUILDING THE BULLS is our development program for Junior players (Club or school)
to take their skills further, supporting the move into Senior teams and preparing for representative hockey.

Division 1 Men's Coach

Mitch Baker is returning as the Bulls Division 1 Men's Co-coach for 2026!

Hailing from Maryborough, Mitch secured three Division 1 premierships with Granville Hockey Club (1999-2001) in the early stages of his hockey journey. Since joining Bulimba in 2002, he has been a force, clinching the Division 1 premiership that very year.

With over 250 games played and captaincy of the 2016 Div 1 premiership team, Mitch's commitment is unmatched.

Mitch's global experience includes seasons in the Belgium Honour Division (2009-2011), where he not only played but also coached junior boys and girls. His coaching prowess extended to assisting the Belgium U21s Women's Head Coach with the Royal Herakles Division 1 team.

Mitch has also represented Queensland Blaze and Senior Men (2003-2009) and earned a spot in the Australian Masters 35+ team, including representing Australia in 2024.

Awarded life membership in 2017, his impact at Bulimba goes beyond the field, coaching various junior Bulls teams and previously co-coached the Bulls Division 1 team in the mid-2000s.

Mitch's coaching legacy spans school regional teams, state-level teams, serving as the Queensland U18 Assistant Coach, and leading the Men's Thunder team in the 2023 Big Hockey Hit Out.

Division 1 Men's Co-coach and Division 2 Men's Assistant Coach

The Bulls are excited to confirm that Allan Afonso will return as the Division 1 Men's Co-coach and the Division 2 Men’s Assistant Coach for 2026

After a fantastic 2025 season, where he led the Division 2 Men to gold in the Grand Final, Al is back to continue building on their success.

With 40 years of hockey experience, Allan played A Grade in the Sydney competition and represented NSW in both outdoor and indoor hockey. His coaching journey spans 17 years in QLD, progressing from juniors to senior and J1 competitions.

Al’s impressive coaching resume includes:

QLD U18 Outdoor & Indoor Coach (past 3-4 years), working with high-performance pathways

QLD U21s Men’s Indoor Coach 2025-2026

Brisbane Open Men’s Outdoor & Indoor Coach (HQ Championship Winners 2025)

BHA Junior Development Coach for U18 Men’s Teams

Recently invited to Hockey Australia’s Coaching Pathways Program for emerging U18 players

At the club level, Al previously coached at Easts, achieving four grand finals in two years and winning two senior men’s and J1 Boys competitions.

Al is passionate about helping players reach their full potential and is committed to the success of both his teams and the club as a whole. His dedication and experience will be invaluable as he guides the Division 1 and Division 2 Men in 2026!

Women's Premier League 2 Coach

After a great season of development, we are happy to announce that Geoff Hawgood will continue as the Premier League 2 Coach in 2026! Geoff will be joined by Glen Gannon who will be the assistant coach.

Geoff's coaching legacy began at 20, and from 1981-1998, he served as Valleys club coach and selector, including for the Div 1 Men's team. In 2005, he joined Bulimba, assisting in rebuilding the Division 1 Men's team.

For over two decades, Geoff has been a stalwart as a Bulimba Hockey Club coach and selector, earning Life Membership in 2014.

Geoff's influence extends beyond Bulimba; he's been part of Brisbane's Development Committee for U18-21 (boys). His impact on Brisbane and Queensland rep teams is phenomenal, having served as a selector and coach:

Brisbane Representative Team Selector for 10 years

Brisbane U17-18 Coach for 3 years

Brisbane U15 Coach for 11 years (winning 10 consecutive State Championships)

Queensland Coach & Selector for 11 years (winning 9 Australian titles)

Member of the original Queensland Coaching Committee at just 23 years old for 4 years

Geoff's specialty lies in uniting teams, and his passion is evident in developing players and building their confidence. His goal remains to build a Division 1 Bulls Women's team through JT1 development.

J1 Boys Coach

Renae Holmes is returning as the J1 Boys Coach for 2026 at Bulimba Hockey Club! After yet another fantastic season developing the next generation of Bulls, and securing another year of finals, Renae is back to continue leading the squad in 2026!

Renae has been a dedicated coach at Bulimba for four years, coaching U13 in 2021 and 2022, J1 in 2023, 2024, 2025 and now continuing in 2026. She has also made her mark as the Brisbane U13 Boys Coach in 2022 and 2023!

Renae's playing history is a testament to her dedication, with 300+ Brisbane Division 1 games, 11 years representing the Brisbane Scorchers, and proudly wearing the Hockeyroos jersey in 2002!

We have no doubt our J1 Boys are set up for another successful season with Renae leading the way!
